Check out HUCK#015

What’s killing the coral reefs? Huck reveal all in their six page fold-out feature special, illustrated by
Yellena James and compiled my me (Ruth Carruthers).  Here I got to research and write about one of the environmental issues I am most passionate about, and work with really talented illustrators and designers to create something that is both informative and beautiful!  Plus the rest of the mag is just as awesome!

Surfers Against Sewage celebrates campaign victory on World Environment Day.

It’s not every day you get to dress up as a mermaid and kiss the President of the British Plastics Federation(BPF). But Friday June 5 was a special day, not only because it was World Environment Day, but also becauseSurfers Against Sewage (SAS) were celebrating a campaign victory, with the release of the British Plastic Federation’s (BPF) Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) guidance manual, that will help reduce the number of mermaids tears making there way onto our beaches. No fish in the sea by 2050, unless we do something about it. That’s the harsh reality outlined in The End of the Line, the first major documentary to illustrate the devastating impact our collective greed is having on the world’s fish stocks. Keep reading →

Teepay

By Ruth Carruthers

Teepay

Those clever people at Howies have just launched Teepay, their new T-shirt company that lets you design and make money from T-shirts.

It works like this: If you like a tee, you place an order, and once it receives 30 orders it goes to print, and they post it out to you. And when you submit your own design, and that goes to print, then you start to earn royalties. Simple.

The SEE, EMM, WHY, KAY one is my favourite.  How clever!

Au Revoir Simone interview

These girls sell organic and fair trade t-shirts at their shows so I felt the need to mention them!

Can I ask you about your name, Au Revoir Simone – it’s taken from the film Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure, right? Do people normally get the reference? It’s pretty freaky for a kids film isn’t it…?
All: Yeah!
Annie: I pretty much watched it at least three times a week for about four years when I was a kid!
Heather: I’d say most people in the US usually get the reference right away, but in Europe people usually think it’s about Simone de Beauvoir, which it’s not.
Erika: It’s very hard for us, because we try and explain, but it’s a very specific type of humour, so trying to explain Pee Wee as a concept to somebody who doesn’t know it is difficult. But the thing about it being freaky, I think parents should let their kids be exposed to really freaky shit, because the world is freaky. What is exciting, though, is Paul Rubens [who plays Pee Wee] might come to our next show in LA!
Heather: Yeah, so we can pretty much disband at this point because the goal has been reached!
Erika: I can’t wait to meet him! Once though, Heather got this wobbly head Pee Wee figure and she brought it to our show, and we had the worst show ever, and we were like, “This is not our mascot ever again!” Keep reading →

Picture 1I hate those targeted advertisements you get on Facebook, you know the ones at the side of your profile page, that somehow know your every interest and desire? I always think it’s just gullible people that click on them…so I guess that makes me gullible then, because I have to admit, I clicked on one the other day, and I haven’t looked back.  The offer just seemed too good to be true; ‘design your own dress and wear it in 10 working days, prices start form £41.’ With a wedding coming up I was intrigued to say the least, and once I noticed they used organic silk, I was sold!
